Lincoln Trail Elementary
It is time to prepare for the 27th annual HANDS Around the World event at Lincoln Trail Elementary! The purpose of HANDS (Heritages and National Differences Study) is to expose the students to different cultures and increase their knowledge of national differences.
Each classroom will be turned into a different country for the day and lessons about those countries are led by volunteer “governors”. Students will spend the day traveling from country to country, learning about the people and cultures of those places.
This event requires numerous volunteers (including 31 classroom governors and 31 assistants) to make it a successful and enriching event for the kids.
Volunteer Positions
Governor:
– Prepare a 25 minute lesson about a country. This lesson can include basic cultural and other information, an activity (craft, dance, game, etc) and food samples.
– An optional Governor’s Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 19 for any new governors who would like feedback, guidance or more information regarding being a governor and creating a presentation.
– Possibly be available to set-up your classroom on Tuesday, May 7 after school.
– Attend HANDS on Wednesday, May 8 to present the 25 minute lesson to different classes of students. This is an early out day, so availability would need to be from 8am to 12:45pm.
*Note: No personal experience with a country is necessary to be a governor.
Classroom Assistant:
– Attend HANDS on Wednesday, May 8 from 8am to 12:45pm, assisting a governor as they present a 25 minute lesson to different classes or students.
General Assistant:
– Be at Lincoln Trail on Wednesday, May 8 during HANDS and be willing to assist in activities such as setting up for the luncheon, help in the classrooms, keeping things on schedule and/or help take items down after the event.
Work Days:
– I am available to help decorate the school and prepare items for HANDS (dates and times are flexible).
– I am available to help set-up (sorting, delivering supplies, etc) the night before HANDS on Tuesday, May 7 anytime between 3:30 – 8:00 p.m.
Food Assistant:
– Attend HANDS on Wednesday, May 8 from 7:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
– Set-up a light breakfast, luncheon, and snacks for HANDS volunteers, replenish food items as needed throughout the day, and help clean up afterwards.
Food Donations:
– *We will send an e-mail via Skylert closer to the event asking for food donations.*
